Wolfie makes special appearance at Culcheth High School's Prom 2024 - Warrington Guardian

Culcheth High School's Year 11 prom got a furry VIP twist as Wolfie joined students at Halliwell Jones Stadium. GCSEs were done, suits were sharp, and the mood was gloriously relieved.

Culcheth High School's Year 11s marked the end of their GCSE slog with Prom 2024 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Wednesday, July 3, and yes, the dance floor had a very special guest - Wolfie. Because apparently a prom is not truly a Warrington occasion until a mascot appears and steals at least some of the spotlight.

Students from Culcheth High School turned out in proper style, celebrating the end of school days before results day arrives later this summer with its usual cocktail of nerves, envelopes and parents pretending not to hover. For one evening, though, exams were parked firmly in the past, which is exactly where algebra belongs.

The venue was a strong choice. Halliwell Jones Stadium gives the whole thing a big-event feel, and fair play to the pupils, parents and staff who helped make it look polished. Culcheth does scrub up well when it wants to, and this was very much one of those nights.

There is, however, something delightfully odd about the original article announcing that it came via an exclusive subscriber partnership with USA Today and was written by American colleagues, while also saying it does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Nothing says local prom coverage quite like a transatlantic publishing disclaimer wedged between Wolfie and Year 11 photos. Very normal. Very 2024.

The Warrington Guardian had asked high schools across Warrington about covering their prom nights, with photos expected from Great Sankey High School, Penketh High School, Culcheth High School, King's Leadership Academy, St Gregory's Catholic High School, Bridgewater High School, Beamont Collegiate Academy, Lymm High School, Birchwood Community High School, Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, Padgate Academy, Sir Thomas Boteler, Green Lane School and UTC Warrington.

For Culcheth High School, the photos were taken and shared by teachers and parents, which is rather lovely. Not every big moment needs a red carpet photographer barking instructions. Sometimes the best images are captured by the people who have watched these teenagers grow from oversized blazers to prom suits and dresses.

Among the shared community photos were George Burgess with his form tutor Miss Holt, sent in by Deborah Burgess, and Deacon Taylor, submitted by Suzanne Taylor, with the original photo prompt also showing the spelling Deacon Talyor. Niomi Daniels shared Tilia Mclinden, while a community contributor sent in Trinity Forshaw.

Kayleigh Byron shared a photo of Ellisha Byron and Charlie Millington, and Keighley Boyes contributed Liam Gardener and Elle Holme. Helen Heesom shared a group shot featuring Jimmy Hodgkiss, Finley McLoughlin, Ewan Irwin, Charlie Bailey, Sam Kočiš, Will McCaffrey, Will Heesom and Miles Birchall.

Gemma Ackerley shared photos including Gabriella Ackerley, Sienna Ackerley and Rachel Leadbeater, as well as Gabriella Ackerley, Sienna Ackerley, DJ Ralfs and Chloe Forbes. Chelsie Whittaker also shared Chloe Forbes, and Jo Ralfs contributed DJ Ralfs.

The whole thing reads as a proper community scrapbook, and that is the positive bit worth saying plainly. These pupils have come through years of lessons, revision, mocks, assemblies and the occasional school corridor drama worthy of a Netflix subplot. They deserved a night where they could dress up, relax and be celebrated.

If there is a criticism, it is that the article itself gets a bit repetitive, with Culcheth High School listed again and again where the photos would sit, like someone leaned on the copy-and-paste button after too much buffet quiche. Still, the heart of it is warm, local and worth keeping.

So, congratulations to Culcheth High School's class of 2024. Wolfie may have made the headline, but the students were the real stars, and quite right too.
