Partridge Lakes Cafe and Park in Culcheth has properly leaned into summer, opening a new lakeside walk complete with a sandy beach, extra food and drink huts, and character pedalos. Yes, Culcheth now has unicorns, flamingos and dragons on the water, because apparently a normal boat was too emotionally restrained.
As reported by Emma Gill and Gary Porter, the attraction has followed its Springland event over Easter with the launch of the dog-friendly Partridge Park Walk. The route is pram and wheelchair accessible, which is exactly the sort of practical thinking local families actually need rather than another place where you need the calves of a fell runner and the patience of a saint.
The walk is described as a lakeside trail through the natural world, with points of interest along the way and giant games including Connect 4 and Kerplunk. There are benches and picnic benches dotted about too, so you can sit down, admire the view, and pretend you are not eyeing up someone else's pizza.
The pedalos cost £15 for a 20-minute session, available from 10am to 2pm on selected dates, with online booking and the option to choose your pedalo. Lovely idea, genuinely. Slightly less lovely if you have multiple children with strong opinions about mythical creatures and no understanding of household budgets.
Dogs are welcome, and can even have a swim when it is quiet. The main Partridge Lakes Café is dog-friendly inside and out, with doggie treats available, plus food to feed the fish and ducks. Frankly, some dogs around here are now getting a better social calendar than most adults.
There are also new refreshment outlets selling pizzas, coffees and more, plus a bar serving alcohol and a new lakeside outdoor seating area. This is where Partridge Lakes is getting it right, because if you are going to invite families, walkers, dog owners and weary grandparents, you had better provide caffeine, carbs and somewhere decent to sit.
Owners Barbara Ikin and Callum Morgan said the lakes are looking stunning in the spring sunshine and that they are looking forward to a fantastic summer. They also said they have worked hard on the new Partridge Park trail, extra refreshment outlets and the colourful fleet of pedalos. Credit where it is due, it does look like a serious effort rather than a token picnic bench and a laminated sign flapping in the wind.
Partridge Lakes will also host the Cheshire Wellness Festival on Sunday, June 28, promising a day to pause, reset and reconnect. Make of that what you will. In Culcheth terms, reconnecting usually means bumping into someone you knew from school while holding a takeaway coffee and pretending you are not in a rush.
The attraction sits next to Partridge Lakes Fishery, which covers 70 acres with 394 pegs across 15 waters. Images connected to the attraction have been credited to Partridge Lakes and David Munn Photography, and the wider report also notes information from the MEN.
There has also been a welcome change to the usual fireworks display this year. Instead of a traditional loud display, Partridge Lakes plans to host a professional laser show synchronised to music, alongside low-noise fireworks with no bangs. That is a thoughtful move, especially for families, pets and anyone who spends November trying to calm a trembling Labrador under the kitchen table.
Partridge Park Walk is open daily from 7.30am to 5pm, with refreshment huts open on selected dates. The main café is open daily, including bank holidays, from 7.30am to 4.30pm, with last hot food served at 3pm.
Overall, it is a very decent win for Culcheth: accessible, family-friendly, scenic and a bit whimsical without tipping completely into theme-park nonsense. The only real grumble is the usual one, once you add pedalos, pizza, coffee and treats for the dog, your peaceful lakeside stroll may start looking suspiciously like a day out with a receipt attached.
