The play area at Culcheth Village Green has been transformed following a major investment of around £213,000, giving local children a much-needed upgrade from the old routine of pushing the same tired swing.
The revamped space now includes a zip line, multi-play units, see-saws and educational panels, with equipment designed for children across different age groups. It is a welcome improvement, and judging by how busy the area was shortly after reopening, families clearly agree.
Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council provided £140,000 of the funding, while the remaining investment supported the wider project. The work was delivered by Wicksteeds Leisure, which also handed out goodie bags during the official opening.
Project supporters attended the celebration, alongside Cllr Tony Higgins, Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member for communities, culture and leisure.
Cllr Higgins said the project had “breathed new life” into the play area and described the change as transformational. That may sound like classic council-opening language, but in this case it is difficult to argue. A zip line and proper multi-play equipment are a considerable improvement, particularly for families who want somewhere local that is free, engaging and not dependent on a car journey.
The investment is excellent news for Culcheth, although the real test will be keeping the equipment safe, clean and in good condition for years to come. Six figures buys a sparkling playground, but regular maintenance is what stops it becoming another village asset that slowly loses its shine.
For now, though, the upgraded Culcheth Village Green play area looks like a strong investment in family life, with plenty to keep children occupied and considerably less opportunity for parents to hear, “I’m bored,” before they have finished their coffee.
