Plans submitted to convert part of former CPS Shopping Centre into 14 residential dwellings - Warrington Worldwide

Plans are in to turn part of the former CPS Shopping Centre into 14 homes. It is a practical reuse of empty space, though the details will need proper scrutiny.

Plans have been submitted to convert part of the former CPS Shopping Centre into 14 residential dwellings, giving a tired old commercial space a potential new purpose.

On the face of it, reusing an existing building is far preferable to watching it sit vacant, collecting grime and becoming another monument to the great British habit of letting useful places quietly wither. Fourteen homes is not a vast estate, and bringing residents into a former shopping site could add some life where retail clearly no longer does.

That said, Culcheth and the wider Warrington area have seen enough schemes where “homes” becomes shorthand for squeezing as many units as possible into every available corner. The quality of the dwellings, access, parking, bin storage, daylight and impact on neighbours matter just as much as the headline number. Nobody wants a conversion that looks tidy on a planning drawing but feels like an afterthought once people move in.

The application is now the important bit: a chance to establish whether this is a sensible renewal of the former CPS Shopping Centre or another case of developers treating liveability as optional paperwork. Reusing a redundant site is a positive start, but it needs to be done properly.
