Culcheth 'memory cafe' supports those living with dementia Community Culcheth By Tom Bedworth Community Reporter Share 0 Comments A 'memory cafe' is coming to Culcheth this month to help those living with dementia (Image: Canva) This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. A 'MEMORY cafe' is opening in Culcheth in order to help those living with dementia. It is hoped that the support group will give an opportunity for people to come together and promote one another's wellbeing. The memory cafe will be hosted every Friday at the Daten sports club, in Culcheth. The club is hoping to restore itself at the heart of the community (Image: Newsquest) This is the latest in a line of community initiatives being run by the sports club, which is hoping to restore itself at the heart of the community in Culcheth. The Daten has stood in Culcheth since the 1940s, when it was built by the UK Atomic Energy Authority as a social club for its employees; it was then sold to the community of Culcheth and has a covenant on the premises that ensures it remains in use by the residents of the village. Now, the sports club will host the memory cafe for two hours each week, between 12.30-2.30pm on a Friday afternoon, which hopes to provide support for anyone living with early-to-mid-stage dementia. The cafe will also be open to the carers of those individuals, and on offer at the cafe will be activities designed to help 'stimulate people's long-term memories by making memory boxes, playing board games' and other activities, too. This group is part of the Daten's 'community connections' project, which will see the club open its doors to provide a welcoming space for community groups to use for their own benefit. Included in the 'community connections' project are the groups that will move from Culcheth Library during its four-month refurbishment, which includes a jigsaw club and a 'knit and natter' session, too. The memory cafe will take place from Friday, March 17 (Image: The Daten) The Daten said "This group is primarily run by volunteers," before adding that there will be "tea, cakes, and general socialising" at the group, too. For more information, visit the Daten Sports Club's social media page - or you can find the club on Charnock Road, Culcheth. The memory cafe will run between 12.30-2.30pm on a Friday afternoon from the Daten, in Culcheth - it will begin on Friday, March 17.
