Man stole tracksuit and medication during burglary of house in Warrington - Warrington Guardian

A Culcheth man has avoided prison after admitting a burglary in Great Sankey, where a tracksuit and medication were stolen. The sentence is firm, but eyebrows will rise.

Lee Kewley, 43, of Warrington Road, Culcheth, appeared before Warrington Magistrates’ Court last week for sentencing after pleading guilty to burglary dwelling and theft.

The offences took place on July 16 at a property on Helmsdale Lane in Great Sankey. According to court documents, Kewley entered the home as a trespasser and stole a tracksuit and medication, with the value of both listed as unknown.

Let’s be clear, this is not some cheeky village mishap to be laughed off over a brew. Burglary means someone’s home was violated, and stealing medication adds a particularly grim edge to it. A tracksuit may sound oddly mundane, but the intrusion is the real damage here.

Kewley was spared jail and instead received a community order from the magistrates. As part of that, he must complete a six-month alcohol treatment programme and carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. A two-year restraining order was also imposed.

There is a sensible argument for the alcohol treatment element, because if addiction is part of the problem, tackling it properly is better than simply letting the revolving door spin again. But plenty of residents in Culcheth and across Warrington will understandably look at a house burglary and wonder why prison was avoided. Both reactions can be true at once, because life is rarely as tidy as a magistrates’ sentencing sheet.

It also carried a rather odd note about an exclusive subscriber partnership with USA Today and sister title The Herald, which feels like a lot of transatlantic furniture to drag into a very local Warrington court story.
