European languages took centre stage at Culcheth High School on September 26, and, refreshingly, the lesson plan involved rather more cake than most of us usually associate with education.
The school marked European Day of Languages with a European Bake-Off, bringing together Years 7 and 8 students to celebrate linguistic diversity and different cultures. Culcheth High School described the event as a great success, with entries inspired by countries including France, Spain, Greece and Italy.
A school spokesperson said the celebration aimed to promote greater intercultural understanding, while students and staff united in the kitchens to demonstrate their baking skills. Quite an impressive way to make cultural education memorable, although the judges may have needed a serious amount of coffee before tackling all those entries.
Headteacher Mr Hunt and interim head of Spanish Miss Keenan had the unenviable job of choosing the winners. They awarded third place to Indie Kirk for her impressive gondola cake.
Jacob Walker and Jasper Parker-Kerner followed in second place with their magnificent meatballs and spaghetti cupcakes, a combination that sounds both imaginative and potentially hazardous to anyone with a sweet tooth.
Joint first place went to Sofía Haaland Alonso for her terrific London-inspired cake and Carlota Haaland Alonso for her beautiful Parisian-themed cake.
Culcheth High School said it and the wider community were proud to promote cultural diversity within the school. That is certainly worth celebrating: students learned about Europe, showcased their creativity and produced enough baked goods to make geography considerably more appealing.
