Golf club in ‘full extent of the law’ warning over bike damage to course greens - Leigh Journal

Leigh Golf Club says intruders on e-bikes have damaged its course in Culcheth, and the club is not exactly reaching for the gentle putter here.

Leigh Golf Club, based off Broseley Lane in Culcheth, has reported damage to its course after intruders allegedly accessed the site and rode electric bikes across the fairways and greens.

The club says the damage is believed to have been caused by youths on e-bikes, with access reportedly gained via Broseley Avenue on Monday, April 13. Not ideal, is it? Golf greens are not motocross tracks, and anyone confusing the two needs less throttle and more upbringing.

Leigh Golf Club has warned that anyone caught damaging the greens in this way will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. That is a firm stance, and frankly, fair enough. Maintaining a golf course takes time, money, patience and the sort of grass-care obsession usually reserved for retired dads with laser-level lawns.

Members have asked for information from anyone who saw children on e-bikes in the area at the time, and for any CCTV footage that may show what happened. The club is clearly trying to protect its grounds, and in a village like Culcheth, where people notice when a wheelie bin is out too early, someone may well have seen something.

The original report was by Nathan Okell, Chief Reporter, in the Leigh Journal. It also carried a note about an exclusive subscriber partnership with sister title USA Today and mentioned The Herald, which is a rather transatlantic amount of baggage for a story about bike damage off Broseley Lane, but there we are.

The positive here is that Leigh Golf Club has spoken up quickly and clearly. The negative is obvious, someone has caused needless damage to a local facility, and that sort of behaviour drags the rest of the community into dealing with the mess.
