The former Quench Café in the heart of Culcheth could soon be swapping coffee and cake for check-ups, fillings and the unmistakable whirr of a dentist's drill.
Proposals submitted to Warrington Borough Council seek full planning permission to change the use of the empty Lodge Drive premises into a dental surgery. Permission is also being requested for replacement and upgraded windows and doors.
The café closed its doors for the final time in September, after 12 years serving the community. Since opening in 2013, it had been staffed mainly by volunteers and had also been used as a community hall, so its departure was a genuine loss for the village. Still, an empty unit gathering dust is hardly a thrilling long-term plan, and a healthcare business would at least give the building a useful new lease of life.
Applicant Benjamin Batrak says the proposed dental practice would create 10 full-time jobs and operate from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm. That is a respectable employment boost for the village, although anyone hoping for a Saturday appointment may want to keep their toothbrush and expectations equally well managed.
The planning documents describe the site as a single-storey, flat-roofed commercial unit with a glazed frontage facing Lodge Drive, next to Culcheth Village Green. It sits within an established commercial parade surrounded by retail, business, community and residential uses, with good pedestrian links, public transport and local amenities nearby.
The proposed internal layout would include a reception and waiting area, several dental surgeries, decontamination and sterilisation rooms, an OPG/CBCT imaging room, staff offices, welfare facilities, an accessible toilet and circulation areas. The plans say public, clinical and staff spaces would be clearly separated and designed to meet operational and infection-control standards.
Externally, the changes are described as minimal, with the building's overall form, scale and appearance remaining unchanged. That should be welcome news in a village centre where planning proposals can sometimes arrive wearing more architectural ambition than the surroundings requested.
The documents argue that a dental practice is an appropriate town-centre use and would provide an essential healthcare service to the community. Whether the scheme gets the go-ahead now rests with Warrington Borough Council, but for Culcheth residents the prospect is clear: less café nostalgia, more access to dental care, and potentially 10 new full-time jobs.
