Police and paramedics were called to Culcheth Linear Park at 3.13pm on Saturday, February 11, after reports of a woman with serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say she is believed to be a teenager, her next of kin have been informed, and formal identification has not yet taken place.
Residents reported seeing a large emergency services presence in the area on Sunday morning, with police at the park and a crime scene operation underway. A Newsquest image from the scene showed officers in place, which will have been deeply unsettling for anyone passing through or living nearby.
Cheshire Police have said they do not believe there is a wider threat to the public. That is important, and welcome, but let us not pretend it makes the news any less devastating. It is still a young life lost, a family shattered, and a community left anxious and grieving.
Detective Chief Inspector Adam Waller said he understands the concern this incident is likely to cause and is aware of rumours circulating online. He urged people not to speculate while officers follow numerous lines of enquiry. Quite right too. The village rumour mill may be fast, but speed is not the same as truth, and armchair detective work on Facebook helps precisely nobody.
DCI Waller said local residents will see an increased police presence in the area while the investigation continues. He said detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, seen anything unusual in Culcheth Linear Park around 3pm, or has CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist.
