Culcheth Scouts have produced another Remembrance Day display, and it is exactly the sort of village effort that cuts through the usual noise. Remembrance is not a seasonal decorating contest or an excuse for a quick photo beside a poppy. It is a time to recognise the service and sacrifice behind the freedoms we tend to treat as standard issue.
The Scouts deserve real credit for marking the occasion with care. Young people taking the time to learn, create and contribute to a public tribute is encouraging, particularly when attention spans are routinely being mugged by phones and whatever nonsense is currently doing the rounds online.
There is something quietly important about seeing Culcheth organisations keep Remembrance visible in the community. These displays give residents a reason to pause, reflect and remember those affected by conflict, including service personnel, families and communities whose losses did not end when the headlines moved on.
Well done to Culcheth Scouts for continuing a tradition with dignity. It may be called an “amazing” display, but the greater achievement is helping ensure that remembrance remains meaningful rather than merely decorative.
