A murder investigation has been launched after Brianna Ghey, 16, was found with multiple stab wounds on a path in Linear Park, Culcheth, at about 15:15 GMT on Saturday 11 February 2023.
Brianna, who was from Birchwood, died at the scene. That sentence alone is enough to stop the whole village in its tracks. Linear Park is a familiar local spot, known to many of us for dog walks, fresh air and the occasional muddy trainer, not for a tragedy of this scale.
Cheshire Police said officers had launched a murder inquiry, with Det Ch Supt Mike Evans describing the incident as a truly awful attack
. No argument there. There are moments when the usual village grumbles about traffic, potholes and parking suddenly feel very small indeed.
Police said they were especially keen to speak to two people seen in the park. They were described as a white man and woman, believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, both with dark curly hair. The man was said to have been wearing a longish dark hooded coat, while the woman was described as wearing a distinctive red or purple black checked blanket-style coat and a long flowing skirt, dress or trousers.
Det Ch Supt Evans said the pair may hold vital information for the investigation. Officers were also seeking information from anyone who was in Linear Park between around 13:30 and 16:00 GMT, or anyone who may have seen Brianna in the hours before her death.
He said: Brianna was a 16-year-old, well-loved girl who met a tragic end yesterday.
That is the heart of it. Behind every police cordon, every statement and every forensic search is a family from Birchwood now facing the unimaginable.
A post-mortem examination was taking place to establish the cause of death. Cheshire Police also said officers were supporting Brianna’s family while searches continued to trace the murder weapon and establish a motive.
A section of Linear Park was cordoned off after Brianna was found by members of the public. Additional officers were sent to patrol the area, which many people across Culcheth and Warrington know as a well-used walking route.
Det Ch Supt Evans said police were working hard to find those responsible for Brianna’s death and that extra officers were in and around Culcheth to support the investigation. Reassurance is welcome, of course, but let’s be honest, the shock will not lift quickly. This is a serious and devastating incident in a place where people expect peace, not police tape.
The wider report referred to Cheshire, Warrington, Culcheth, Cheshire Police, BBC North West, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but the focus here remains where it should be, on Brianna Ghey, her family, and the investigation into her death.
