Culcheth Cloth Shop set to move online after 34 years in the village - Warrington Guardian

After 34 years in Culcheth, The Cloth Shop is closing its physical doors and moving online. Lovely for the website, less lovely for our village centre.

After 34 years of trading in Culcheth, The Cloth Shop is shutting its bricks-and-mortar shop and moving entirely online in 2023. That means the end of its physical presence at Culcheth Shopping Centre, also referred to in the announcement as the CPS Centre, which is a real shame for anyone who likes their fabric with a side order of expert advice and proper village chat.

The business first began back in 1989 at the Village Gallery in Culcheth, before moving to Culcheth Shopping Centre in 2003. Owner Lynn announced the news on social media on Sunday, January 8, saying: "After 34 years I have decided to close The Cloth Shop in the CPS Centre."

She added that the shop's website will continue, with all stock available online and new arrivals being added as they come in. In Lynn's words: "I hope you will come on this new journey with me." She also thanked the shop's customers and friends for "the laughs and tears", which sounds about right for three decades of hems, pins, patterns and the occasional sewing-machine-induced emotional collapse.

There is, of course, a sensible side to this. Businesses across Warrington and beyond are being squeezed by rising costs, and moving online can cut overheads while keeping loyal customers supplied. That is the practical bit. The less cheerful bit is that another familiar local shopfront is disappearing, and Culcheth village centre does not exactly benefit when independent businesses vanish from view.

The Cloth Shop built its reputation on limited edition fabrics, patterns, needlework supplies, buttons, ribbons and the kind of hands-on advice that no algorithm, however smug, can properly replace. Regular customers have described it as an "Aladdin's cave", which feels accurate. You did not so much pop in as disappear into a world of fabric, thread and possibilities.

Customers have been quick to praise Lynn's knowledge and kindness. Brenda Coulson wrote in a Google review: "I haven't made a garment for about 35 years. Lynn gave me so much help choosing an easy pattern suitable for my size and body shape. It was like having a private sewing lesson. I'm keen to get started again now."

Another reviewer, Joanna, called it "A real gem for anyone who likes to knit, sew or craft, or just needs to buy some unique buttons or ribbon (at a fraction of the cost of stuff in the big chains). Friendly and helpful staff too." That is exactly the sort of praise big chains spend fortunes trying to manufacture, usually with all the warmth of a self-checkout machine having a bad day.

The original report was by Tom Bedworth, Community Reporter, and oddly carried a note about an exclusive subscriber partnership with sister title USA Today, saying it was written by American colleagues and did not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Quite why a Culcheth fabric shop needs the transatlantic treatment is anybody's guess, but here we are.

The important bit is this: The Cloth Shop is not disappearing completely. Its stock will continue through its website at https://www.theclothshop.co.uk/, with further updates on the shop's social media pages. Still, for Culcheth, losing the physical shop after 34 years feels like a neatly cut piece of local history being folded away.
