Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to a large crop fire on New Hall Lane in Culcheth shortly after 9pm on Monday.
One fire engine attended, with crews using beaters and a hose reel to extinguish the blaze, which measured around 100 square metres. That is a substantial patch of burning field, and thankfully the response appears to have stopped it becoming an even bigger problem.
There are no reported injuries in the account, but fires in dry crops are serious business, not countryside theatrics. Fields can turn into a fast-moving hazard remarkably quickly, particularly when conditions are dry and the wind decides to join in.
