Brianna Ghey: Boy and girl arrested over Warrington park killing - BBC

Culcheth was left devastated after Brianna Ghey, 16, was found fatally injured in Linear Park. Two local 15-year-olds were arrested as police began investigating the tragedy.

There are some stories that stop a village cold, and Brianna Ghey's death was one of them. On Saturday, 16-year-old Brianna was found with stab wounds on a path in Linear Park, Culcheth, shortly after 15:00 GMT. Despite the efforts of emergency services, she died at the scene.

Linear Park is ordinarily the sort of place associated with dog walkers, muddy boots and people trying to pretend a brisk lap counts as exercise. It is a familiar, well-used corner of Culcheth, which made the news all the more horrifying. Nobody should be unsafe in a local park, least of all a young person.

A boy and a girl, both aged 15 and from the local area, were arrested on suspicion of Brianna's murder and held in custody. Cheshire Police said detectives were working to establish the exact circumstances, trace the weapon and understand the motive behind the attack.

Brianna, who was a transgender girl, was described online as a “sweet angel” and a “beautiful girl”. Det Ch Supt Mike Evans said there was, at that stage, no evidence to suggest her death was a hate crime. That distinction matters to an investigation, but it does not make the loss of Brianna any less devastating for her family, friends and the wider community.

Brianna's family are from nearby Birchwood, and Birchwood Community High School, where she was a pupil, said it was shocked and truly devastated by her death. Head teacher Emma Mills said the school would support pupils and the wider school community during an exceptionally distressing time.

Labour MP Jess Phillips called Brianna's death “utterly tragic” and sent love to her parents on their unimaginable loss. For once, the usual political noise appropriately fell away. This was not a story for grandstanding, only grief and the hard work of finding out what happened.

Police increased patrols around Culcheth and Linear Park to reassure residents. It was a necessary response, though the grim reality is that reassurance is difficult when a place people know so well has become associated with such violence. Brianna deserved safety, dignity and a future. Culcheth deserved never to have to absorb a tragedy like this.
